From crisis to hope: our best achievements across a decade

Private Search and Rescue Pioneers
MOAS was the first private-funded organisation to start Search and Rescue (SAR) operations in the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas, using drone technology. Our commitment provided a model for civil society SAR, as well as other NGOs.
Impact
- Over three years, MOAS has rescued 40,000 vulnerable children, women, and men from perilous situations at sea.

Providing a lifeline to Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh
In 2017, witnessing the harrowing plight of Rohingya refugees escaping Myanmar, MOAS swiftly redirected its efforts to Bangladesh.

- Delivered 40 tons of vital food aid.
- Established MOAS Aid Stations, extending medical support to 90,000 individuals.

Fostering hope and resilience to Ukraine
Since day one, MOAS has been on the front line, running an emergency response operation with our all-Ukrainian team of 150 doctors, nurses, paramedics, drivers, and 50 ambulances. Our Mobile Medical Unit (MMU) extends critical medical aid to communities cut off from healthcare.

August 2014 First Mission
MOAS’ first SAR mission takes off. The ship Phoenix leaves the Valletta Grand Harbour on 25th August 2014, the birth of our commitment to saving lives. MOAS equipped Phoenix with 2 drones for a better visual range to locate people needing rescue.

May 2015 Second Mission
Building on our first success, we extended our reach, demonstrating resilience and dedication to our cause.

June 2016 Third Mission

2015 Aegean Sea Mission
MOAS ventured into the eastern Mediterranean route with a mission in the Aegean Sea to address the challenges posed by the significant movement of people across this region.

2015/2016 and 2018 Andaman Sea Mission
In response to the Rohingya crisis, MOAS conducted observation missions in the Andaman Sea, focused on monitoring the route along which thousands of refugees were displaced.

2017 In Bangladesh to assist Rohingya Refugees
MOAS moved its operations to Bangladesh to assist Rohingya refugees fleeing violence in Myanmar. More than 40 tons of food supplies were delivered, while two Aid Stations were set up to provide emergency health care services to over 90.000 patients.

2020 Filling the Gap: Covid-19 response
Bangladesh
MOAS repurposed workshops for the manufacture of throw bags into a hub to produce reusable, washable cotton masks. We created 883,514 masks using local materials, providing a livelihood to local tailors.

2020-2021 Remote Learning Project & Masks Making
Malta
MOAS distributed tablets and modems with Internet connections to migrant families residing in the reception centres, so that students could follow online lessons during the lockdown. We also helped vulnerable communities by producing and distributing 10.000 cotton reusable masks made by a fantastic team of volunteers.

2019 - Today Bangladesh
MOAS works within the framework of Disaster Risk Reduction, providing technical expertise and support to local partners to deliver Flood and Water Safety Training and Fire Response techniques in response to the high number of water-related deaths and fires in refugee camps.

2022 Ukraine
We save the lives of the injured soldiers on the frontlines thanks to a fleet of 50 fully equipped ambulances and a dedicated team of brave doctors, nurses and drivers. We also treat vulnerable civilians cut off from health services through the Mobile Medical Unit.

Integration Through Education and Information (VOPs) project for migrant communities and residents in Malta.

2023 Sudan
Start of a humanitarian aid mission in Sudan: shipping therapeutic food and vital medical supplies to help the vulnerable people affected by the conflict.

July 2023 Malta
In July, MOAS delivered 1400 liters (700 bottles) of drinking water and 700 sachets of rehydration mineral salt to the residents of Peace Lab Laboratory to help them to better cope with the heatwave that hit the island.
