The Migrant Offshore Aid Station (MOAS) finalizes partnership with US registered charity Global Impact allowing its US supporters the benefits of tax exemption when making donations.
As MOAS pushes forward in its drive for donations a long awaited milestone has been reached. This partnership between European registered MOAS and American 501(C)3 registered charity Global Impact , will allow a more committed engagement with US supporters and precedes an important period of campaigning and fundraising for MOAS in the US.
By the end of 2015 as many as 30,000 lives may have been lost in the Mediterranean, ‘the world’s deadliest migrant crossing’ according to IOM. In July and August 2015 alone an estimated 900 have died from drowning, asphyxia and dehydration in the Central Mediterranean region. MOAS was set up to mitigate this loss of life and rescue those in peril using a 40 meters vessel, two RHIBS, extensive UAV capabilities and a specialist search and rescue team.
Martin Xuereb, Director of MOAS, says: “We have always had backing and encouragement from donors and supporters in the USA. However, with the death toll in the Mediterranean on the rise, global solidarity is more important than ever and we need to raise the funds to keep operations going. This partnership with Global Impact not only allows us to deepen and expand our existing US relationships but also acts as a significant capacity expansion for us, with the Global Impact development specialists now linked to our campaign offering a wide range of experiences and capabilities. We look forward to a long and fruitful collaboration aimed at mitigating loss of life at sea.”
All US donations can be made through MOAS’ website at www.moas.eu/donate under the ‘$ Other (USD)’ tab with donations passing through Global Impact’s MOAS Fund. Donations can be made via wire transfer using the US bank account information or via the Global Impact MOAS fund fundraising platform www.moas.charity.org as outlined on the website.
