About Us

We extend life-saving assistance and medical care to the world’s most vulnerable communities amidst crises.

Our mission is to set an example for civil society’s involvement in addressing global humanitarian crises. Since our establishment, our outreach has expanded to the Central Mediterranean, the Aegean Sea, the Andaman Sea, Bangladesh, Malta, Yemen, Somalia, Ukraine, and Sudan.

Our work has been funded and supported by people all over the world, who recognise the importance of solidarity against a “globalization of indifference.”

MOAS History: Transforming Lives Globally

Since launching its inaugural mission in August 2014, MOAS has been at the forefront of humanitarian efforts, pioneering Search and Rescue missions in the Mediterranean and setting a transformative model for civil society engagement. Over a span of three years at sea (2014-2017), MOAS demonstrated unwavering commitment, saving and aiding over 40,000 children, women, and men in the Central Mediterranean and Aegean Sea.

In December 2017, in collaboration with UNHCR, MOAS organised a vital aerial evacuation mission, airlifting 74 vulnerable individuals from Libya to safety in Niger.

Shifting focus to Bangladesh in September 2017, MOAS delivered 40 tonnes of humanitarian aid to aid the government’s response to the Rohingya refugee crisis stemming from violence in Myanmar. Establishing two Aid Stations in Cox’s Bazar, our dedicated team served Shamlapur and Unchiprang refugee camps and the local Bangladeshi communities. By December 2018, MOAS Aid Stations provided essential care and medication to over 90,000 patients.

An additional effort was a month-long observation mission in the Andaman Sea in April 2018, drawing international attention to the necessity of a coordinated Search and Rescue strategy in the area.

Since 2019, MOAS has shifted its focus to Disaster Risk Reduction, offering Flood, Water, and Fire Safety training in refugee camps and host communities. This initiative equips refugee volunteers and local participants with life-saving skills to respond promptly to water-related and fire emergencies and potential catastrophes.

In Yemen, Somalia, and Sudan, MOAS delivers life-saving famine relief, ensuring the timely distribution of ready-to-use therapeutic foods and pharmaceutical supplies to local partners.

Responding to the crisis in Ukraine in February 2022, MOAS initiated a comprehensive program providing emergency medical care and first-response services. With a fleet of 50 fully-equipped ambulances, our skilled teams of 150 medical professionals have saved over 38,000 lives on the frontline and more than 25,000 in communities cut off from medical infrastructure.

Moreover, MOAS, in collaboration with the Ronald McDonald House Charity (Latvia), MHP Gromadi, and the Oksana Dmytriieva Charitable Foundation, operates a Mobile Medical Unit, offering Primary Health services to support civil communities and aiming for a reduction in mortality and equitable healthcare access for all those affected by conflict.

In Malta, we run diverse projects assisting migrant communities, fostering integration, and promoting solidarity through educational, personal development, sports, well-being, and English language classes. The Remote Learning project ensures connectivity for families and adult learners, providing tablets and modems to facilitate continuous education. Simultaneously, Information and Learning Centres in AWAS-run open centres serve as multifunctional learning spaces.

Looking ahead, MOAS remains committed to initiating new humanitarian activities worldwide, addressing emerging needs and continuing its transformative impact on communities in crisis.
