The first 21 tablets and internet connections have been provided to migrant families to help vulnerable students to keep up with remote education
Malta, 9th June 2020. During the Covid-19 pandemic, several migrant families have been experiencing difficulties in accessing the remote education services on behalf of their children, due to a lack of resources. For this reason, MOAS provided 21 tablets and internet connections to 21 vulnerable migrant families to help them maintain access to education throughout these difficult times. As part of the Malta Remote Learning Project, MOAS provided the following devices:
- 21 x state of the art Samsung Tablets
- 21 x GO plug-and-play modems, donated by GO
- 21 x 6-month subscriptions for internet
The project has been possible thanks to the collaboration of the Agency for the Welfare of Asylum Seekers (AWAS), who identified the recipient families and coordinated with MOAS for the development of the project and the delivery of the items. GO believed in the importance of the project and donated the plug-and-play modems free of a deposit, thus giving its support to these already vulnerable students and families. These personal electronic devices and provided internet connectivity will allow these families and children not only to engage in their school activities but also abide by all rules of social distancing and quarantine through access to needed resources from their own homes.
Regina Catrambone, MOAS Director, stated: “Education is the key to giving young generations a better future. We believe that technology plays a central role and is paramount to new ways of learning. Every person has the right to education, and therefore, especially during a pandemic outbreak, the access to online systems is essential to overcome the digital divide. Tablet and internet connections can offer endless learning opportunities to the recipient families. In difficult times, MOAS is committed to continuing to assist the most vulnerable communities and families in Malta in whatever way we can. We wish to thank everyone, AWAS, the donors, the internet provider GO and all those who made this initiative a successful one. It is only the beginning and hopefully other projects will follow in the future”.
Mauro Farrugia, CEO for AWAS said: “ It is very important for us to work with entities like MOAS. Working together means that we can support people better. This year, because of COVID-19 and the restrictions adopted, it was a difficult for students in the centres to cope with remote education. This project, will not only provide tablets for education but also the facility of a personalized internet connection thus creating more opportunities for children to continue their education. Although in the AWAS centres internet is available, when it comes to individual use it can be difficult. When a family has its own modem it will facilitate and make sure that the children can follow their education. We are very grateful to MOAS and the donors and all the people that helped us along the way”.
