#NobodyDeservesToDieAtSea
Free screening of MOAS documentary film “Fishers of men” on Friday 24th February 2023,University of Malta, Valletta Campus.
The documentary wants to commemorate the lives of innocent people lost at sea and create awareness about the migration phenomenon and its possible solutions.
2022 has set a historical record with 100 million people displaced and forced to leave their homes. Famine, extreme weather events, and wars drove entire communities out of their land and to the unknown. Migration routes have doubled, while regions of the world have become inhabitable and hostile to human life.
Synopsis
The documentary film uses exclusive video materials from the SAR missions to map the Ngo’s history and give a raw, unfiltered view of what maritime search and rescue operations look like. Filmed across several years between 2014 and 2017, the footage shows MOAS responding to the developing migration crisis in the Central Mediterranean and the Aegean Sea. The film outlines the various aspects of the rescues as told by the search and rescue crews, tells the stories of those they saved and gives an insight into the challenges faced by the Catrambone family as they fight to keep the charity alive.
MOAS, between 2014 to 2017, saved 40.000 lives at sea, particularly women, children and the most vulnerable. After shifting operations in the Andaman Sea in 2017, MOAS’s missions have reached other parts of the world where communities are in dire need, including Ukraine, where MOAS supports the local population with ambulances and medical staff.
With the advocacy campaign for #SAFEANDLEGALROUTES MOAS is calling to the EU, national governments, and international institutions to address the urgency of implementing policies on migration to avoid the loss of lives along migration routes.
After the screening, there will be time for networking while enjoying a buffet refreshment and learning about MOAS’s recent humanitarian activities.
