Yemen, a nation ravaged by conflict since 2014, faces one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises. The ongoing strife between Houthi rebels and the Saudi-led coalition supporting Yemen’s internationally recognised government has left a devastating impact on its people. Understanding the current situation is crucial to grasp the extent of the challenges faced by Yemeni civilians today.
Yemen’s Complex Conflict
Yemen’s conflict escalated dramatically in 2014 when Houthi insurgents, backed by Iran, seized control of the capital city, Sanaa. This triggered a military response from neighbouring Saudi Arabia and its allies in 2015, aiming to restore the ousted Yemeni government. Since then, Yemen has become a battleground in a broader regional struggle, with devastating consequences for its population.
Humanitarian Impact and Food Insecurity
Yemen’s humanitarian crisis affects over 21.6 million people, including 11 million children, who require urgent humanitarian assistance. The conflict has decimated Yemen’s economy and infrastructure, exacerbating food insecurity and pushing millions to the brink of famine. Approximately 2.7 million children suffer from acute malnutrition, with hundreds of thousands at risk of severe malnutrition, which can be a life-threatening condition.
Further, the country’s heavy reliance on food imports—around 85% of its food supply—leaves it vulnerable to disruptions in supply chains and price hikes, worsening the plight of its already vulnerable population. Conflict-related challenges have severely limited access to healthcare, clean water, and other essential services, compounding the humanitarian crisis.
Current Conflict Situation
While major hostilities have somewhat subsided since October 2022, sporadic violence persists in key areas like Marib and Taiz. Peace talks mediated by the UN and regional actors, including Oman and China, have seen intermittent progress but have yet to achieve a sustainable resolution. Additionally, groups like al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) continue to exploit the chaos, intensifying attacks and further destabilizing Yemen’s fragile security environment. The conflict’s toll on civilians remains dire, with widespread displacement and disruptions to daily life exacerbating an already dire humanitarian situation. The conflict in Yemen is now particularly affecting the Red Sea region. In response to Israel’s war on Hamas, Houthi rebels have repeatedly attacked ships transiting the Red Sea. These attacks have heightened tensions and disrupted one of the world’s busiest maritime routes, through which almost 15 percent of global seaborne trade passes. The situation remains volatile, with the Houthis vowing to continue their military operations until their demands are met.
MOAS’s Lifesaving Efforts in Yemen
Amidst the turmoil, MOAS plays a crucial role in delivering humanitarian aid to vulnerable populations in Yemen. Since 2019, MOAS has partnered with Edesia Nutrition, Action Medeor, and local partner ADRA to provide specialist malnutrition treatments to children and mothers in need, and vital medical supplies. Last year, MOAS facilitated the delivery of 26 tonnes of nutritional supplements to Yemen, targeting communities in three governorates under the internationally recognized government’s control. This shipment included Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) and Ready-to-Use Supplementary Food (RUSF). MOAS’s efforts have made a significant impact on Yemeni communities devastated by malnutrition and conflict, helping to save thousands lives. who were severe have already received critical treatment through MOAS-supported programs. These interventions have not only saved lives but also provided hope for a healthier future amidst the ongoing crisis.
Addressing Ongoing Challenges
Operating in Yemen poses significant challenges, including security risks, logistical barriers due to damaged infrastructure, and the unpredictable nature of conflict dynamics, as well as the Read Sea tensions. Looking ahead, MOAS is nevertheless preparing for its next significant humanitarian intervention in the country. Together with our partners, MOAS is organising another shipment of lifesaving therapeutic food to Yemen later this year. This initiative aims to ensure that more vulnerable children and families receive critical nutritional support amidst food insecurity and the ongoing conflict.
