One year of war in Sudan and MOAS’ humanitarian relief mission

April 15th, 2023, exactly one year ago, marked the beginning of a violent conflict in Sudan, causing devastation, loss of lives, hunger, and displacement for millions. In response, humanitarian organisations like MOAS have played a crucial role in assisting those affected. As Sudan grapples with the aftermath of this crisis, we must understand the depth of the humanitarian situation, the response efforts, and their challenges.

The Humanitarian Crisis in Sudan

Humanitarian needs across Sudan are at record highs, with 24.8 million people, or every second person, needing assistance in 2024. This is 9 million more than in 2023. The conflict in Sudan has compounded existing challenges, particularly in food security and access to medical care. According to the IPC analysis, approximately 17.7 million people in Sudan, which amounts to 37% of the population, faced high acute food insecurity in 2023. The disruption of agricultural activities and soaring food prices have left millions at risk of famine and malnutrition.

Moreover, approximately 70% of health facilities in conflict-affected areas have been rendered non-functional, exacerbating the risk of disease outbreaks and limiting access to essential healthcare services.

The situation is dire, especially in densely populated areas like Khartoum, Gezira States, Greater Darfur, and Greater Kordofan. The looming lean season threatens to worsen food insecurity and malnutrition further, as resources become more scarce. Immediate action is necessary to prevent increasing suffering and loss of life.

MOAS’ Response to the Crisis

Since last year, MOAS has been providing life-saving aid to the affected population. Through partnerships with Edesia Nutrition and ADRA Sudan, we have delivered 52 tons of therapeutic food to Port Sudan. This aid addresses acute malnutrition, particularly among children and pregnant or breastfeeding mothers. As this aid is being distributed in the country, we have already seen hundreds of severely malnourished children recover, and that is just the beginning.

Additionally, in collaboration with our partner Action Medeor, we are preparing to ship essential medical supplies and kits to Sudan to counteract decreased access to health care. The containers are ready to go out, but the precarious situation in the Red Sea has delayed our shipment.

Challenges

Despite humanitarian organizations’ collective efforts, challenges persist in addressing the scale of the crisis. Limited funding, humanitarian access constraints, and ongoing conflict hinder aid delivery. Moreover, the destruction of critical infrastructure and the displacement of millions have left communities vulnerable and desperate. Rebuilding efforts will require long-term investment and collaboration among various stakeholders to ensure effective aid delivery and the restoration of livelihoods.

The Importance of International Support

International support remains crucial in addressing Sudan’s humanitarian crisis. Sustained funding and resources are essential to provide life-saving assistance to millions affected by food insecurity, malnutrition, and limited access to healthcare. Additionally, diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the underlying causes of the conflict are imperative for lasting peace and stability in the region.

Final Thoughts

As Sudan marks one year since the onset of the conflict, the need for humanitarian assistance remains critical. MOAS’ commitment to providing aid to those in need is unwavering. MOAS aims to make a meaningful impact on the ground by working closely with local partners and leveraging its resources. We recognise the urgency of the situation and remain dedicated to addressing the evolving needs of the affected population.
