Understanding and Responding to Malnutrition in Yemen and Somalia

Amid ongoing crises in Yemen and Somalia, where millions face the harrowing reality of food insecurity and malnutrition, humanitarian organisations like MOAS play a pivotal role in providing life-saving assistance. Since 2019, MOAS, in collaboration with partners such as Edesia Nutrition, International Medical Corps Somalia and ADRA Yemen, has steadfastly committed to addressing the nutritional needs of vulnerable populations in these regions. Through targeted interventions and strategic partnerships, MOAS has delivered crucial nutritional aid to those most in need, offering hope amidst dire circumstances.

Food needs in Yemen

As of January 2024, Yemen faces a significant food crisis, with many households struggling to access enough food. This crisis affects approximately 17.6 million Yemeni people, leading to widespread food insecurity. Alarmingly, nearly half of Yemen’s children suffer from moderate to severe stunting due to malnutrition. Many women and children under five urgently need treatment for acute malnutrition. By August 2023, almost 2.2 million Yemeni children under five were acutely malnourished, with many facing severe complications. Addressing these challenges promptly is crucial, as children with Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) are at significantly higher risk of death than healthy children. Even those who survive face the risk of not reaching their full potential, posing a serious threat to Yemen’s future.

Food needs in Somalia

In Somalia, the situation is equally concerning, as revealed by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) report for January-March 2024. The report indicates that over 4 million Somalis are facing high levels of acute food insecurity. Among the most vulnerable are children aged 6-59 months, with many suffering from acute malnutrition. The situation is particularly dire in Banadir, where 55% of children under five are expected to face acute malnutrition. These statistics underscore the urgent need for comprehensive intervention strategies to address the nutritional crisis gripping Somalia.

Nutritional Programs and Impact

To effectively combat malnutrition, especially among children and pregnant or lactating women, rigorous screening processes are employed to identify and address signs of nutritional deficiency. This approach aligns with WHO guidelines and ensures interventions are tailored to individual needs. MOAS’s efforts have yielded tangible results, with significant quantities of nutritional supplements reaching communities in Yemen and Somalia. Last year alone, a shipment of 26 tonnes of essential supplements, including therapeutic foods and nutrient supplements, reached Yemen, benefiting families across multiple health centres in the Aden region. Through collaborative efforts with local health authorities and organisations, MOAS has extended its reach even to remote areas, ensuring that vulnerable children receive the care they urgently require. We are also hopeful that we will be able to send a new shipment of food aid to Somalia within the next few months.

Target Population and Treatment Approach

Given the gravity of the situation, MOAS’s interventions primarily target children under five and pregnant or lactating women, recognising the critical role nutrition plays during early childhood development. MOAS aims to mitigate the long-term consequences of malnutrition by focusing on this vulnerable demographic. The deployment of specialised nutritional supplements, including Plumpy’Sup, Plumpy’Doz, and Enov’Nutributter, underscores MOAS’s commitment to providing comprehensive care tailored to specific nutritional needs.

Final Thoughts

Despite challenges, MOAS remains committed to alleviating suffering in Yemen and Somalia. Through collaborative efforts and targeted interventions, MOAS makes a meaningful impact, supporting those facing food insecurity and malnutrition. However, sustained support and collective action are essential for lasting change. As MOAS prepares for future shipments, we build on the support of our incredible donors.
