Since the beginning of the war in February 2022, MOAS has been the only NGO providing urgently needed medical evacuations for those critically injured by the ongoing violence. We transport the most critical casualties from the battlefield to hospitals for urgent care.
Today, MOAS is responsible for evacuating the 72% of the most critical casualties from the battlefield. Our team of over 150 medics and drivers running a fleet of 51 ambulances has treated 61,000 wounded soldiers, and we’ve also provided medical care to an additional 28,000 civilians cut off from health services due to the war.
As the world unites for Giving Tuesday, your donation can save lives in Ukraine.
Why Our Work is Crucial
Every day, the war in Ukraine inflicts devastating injuries—shrapnel wounds, mines, artillery fire, and other battlefield traumas. Most of those we rescue are young soldiers who would not survive without immediate care and transport. At MOAS, we offer more than just transport—we provide life-saving interventions. Our highly trained Ukrainian medics, anaesthetists, and drivers are equipped to handle even the most severe trauma cases—often patients on life support—during long, dangerous journeys. Our ambulances are equipped with the latest medical technology, allowing us to transport critically injured, ventilated, and life-support-dependent patients to hospitals, ensuring they receive the advanced care they need.
Operating from several bases near the front lines, MOAS is one of the few organisations in Ukraine able to navigate these challenging conditions, working hand-in-hand with military hospitals and stabilisation points to ensure swift, safe, and effective transfers. Our specialised team ensures that no life is lost en route.
Our Impact
To date, our frontline team has treated 61,000 patients, and proudly, we’ve managed to preserve every life we’ve transported. Through our collaboration with Ronald McDonald House Charities Latvia, we’ve also reached isolated communities with a Mobile Medical Unit, providing critical healthcare to over 28,000 civilians.
Filling the Gap
Our mission in Ukraine is unique—we are the only organisation doing this crucial work—and so are the challenges. Operating a fleet of ambulances equipped to transport critically injured patients for long, dangerous journeys requires substantial resources. Each vehicle is outfitted with ventilators, defibrillators, and the supplies necessary to treat unconscious, life-support-dependent patients.
Coordinating with the Ministry of Defense and military hospitals is complex, and many organizations are unable or unwilling to work under these conditions. However, we believe that these high-stakes interventions are essential. Your support this Giving Tuesday will enable us to continue this life-saving work in one of the world’s most dangerous conflict zones.
Our Ukrainian Team
Our entire team in Ukraine consists of local staff—medics, anesthesiologists, and tactical drivers—with a deep personal investment in the mission. Their dedication, discipline, and ability to navigate the conflict zone make them exceptional at what they do. Despite facing bombings, resource shortages, and constant danger, our teams remain ready to mobilise at a moment’s notice. Learn more about their stories in this blog or in our book Sirens of Hope: The MOAS Mission to Save Lives in Ukraine, highlighting the heroic efforts of our team.
Recently, one of our bases was hit by Russian weapons, destroying the medical supplies stored there, as well as heavily damaging most of the base itself. Thankfully, our team members all survived with just minor injuries and have since returned to work. This resilience is a testament to their commitment to saving lives.
Why Your Donation Matters This Giving Tuesday
MOAS’ operations in Ukraine cost one million dollars each month. We’re struggling to receive institutional funding due to the complexities of working closely with the Ministry of Defense. This means that every donation from private donors, like you, is vital to keeping our ambulances on the road, our medical teams prepared, and our life-saving services in motion.
Without this support, we would not be able to continue evacuating and treating the most critically injured people in Ukraine. This Giving Tuesday, your contribution can make a real difference. By donating, you directly support the incredible work our frontline team performs daily under extreme conditions.
